Alexander Johnston founded the Elgin Mill on the banks of the River Lossie back in 1797. There are over two centuries of experience of crafting luxury clothing and accessories, using the finest natural fibres known to man. Johnstons of Elgin are specialists in cashmere, a rare, sought-after fabric taken from the underbelly of the Cashmere goat.

Founded in 1797, Johnstons of Elgin are the second oldest family business in Scotland.

Boasting the last vertical woollen mill in Britain, Johnstons of Elgin have the sole privilege of being able to completely produce their knitwear from start to finish. There are nearly 30 steps in taking the raw fibre to finished product, with skilled specialists at each stage of the process, passing their secrets down through the generations.

There are over 6500 shades in the Johnston of Elgin colour library, and many of the most popular colours date back to the mid 19th-century.

Johnstons of Elgin has two sites in Elgin and Hawick. The Elgin site is a weaving mill producing yarn and clothing with over 450 employees, while the Hawick site is a knitting mill producing knitwear and accessories, with 250 employees.

With a strong legacy to maintain, Johnstons of Elgin offer apprenticeships to people of all ages in their training centre in Hawick to ensure the preservation of craftsmanship and quality.
