When someone refers to a mac today, they would likely be referring to the now-ubiquitous beige raincoat manufactured by thousands of brands worldwide. However, for the 'Real McCoy', there is just one brand that comes with a rich 200 year history of design and technical innovation.
First patented by Charles Macintosh in 1823, the original Mackintosh raincoat is a unique design of rubberised fabric. As the first ever waterproof raincoat, it revolutionised the industry. Further innovations came over the years, with improvements to it's properties ensuring a lightweight, utilitarian and flexible waterproof material which remains highly sought after.
Women's Single Breasted Khaki Mac
Crafted from carefully sourced fabric in their Scottish workshop, each Mackintosh garment is constructed by one expert coat maker, for ultimate traceability. It takes up to three years to learn how to craft a classic mac from start to finish. Most of the factory's workers began as apprentices, and many of the team have now been perfecting their trade for decades. It is testament to the attention to detail of Mackintosh that the factory can only manufacture 240 coats a week.
With innovation in their blood, the Mackintosh factory continues to push fashion boundaries. With their in-house expertise, recent years have bought collaborations with haute couture fashion houses such as Vetements, Balenciaga and Celine. While the mac remains core in the collection, the Mackintosh factory has broadened it's design style over the years to offer more fashion forward pieces, albeit with the same integrity and quality control.
